Three announcements have been made in the history of Google’s page speed ranking algorithms. The page experience update for 2020, which uses core web vitals was the most recent announcement. In 2018, we had Google page speed updates, and in 2010, we had Google site speed updates.

Google uses only core web vitals. John Mueller, Google’s webmaster, confirmed via Twitter that Google uses only the most recent page speed ranking update. This includes the page experience update which measures page speed using core Web vitals.

John replied “it’s all core web vitals now” when asked if the old page speed algorithms were still used.

Old page speed algorithms. John said “no” to Google’s old page speed algorithms from 2010 and 2018.

Why do we care. Page speed is not a ranking factor that makes a significant difference in ranking purposes. It is important to note that Google no longer uses the page speed algorithms.
